Madame Zeroni told Elya to go to America after he carried her up the mountain. But he forgot to carry her up the mountain before he left, so he got cursed. But then when Stanley carries Zero up the mountain, they're in Texas, which is in America. The mountain that Madame Zeroni was supposed to be carried up was in Latvia or wherever they were.
