Open Question: Are there any restrictions in mailing Maple Syrup & Candy over seas?

I have a pen-pal in Latvia, and he recommended sharing some of our favorite candies and such. He specially requested the Maple Syrup. I asked my mom and she said it sounded alright but pointed out the fact that it might be illegal to send certain things with some of the new precautions dealing with other countries.
